Done: The people of Gera have another popular restaurant back. After the former "Distel" in the Untermhäuser Kulturhaus Schafwiesen reopened as the "Restaurant Leckerland", the "Kuckucksdiele" followed suit on Wednesday. The traditional restaurant on Wilhelm-Herfurth-Straße will keep its name and will be run by the Gkogkas family and their team, who also run the Oscar on Gera's Humboldtstraße.
Homely, seasonal and traditional
On the opening evening, there was quite a hustle and bustle in the "Waldgaststätte" in Heinrichsgrün. Just in time for the celebratory occasion, the social media pages and the restaurant's new homepage went online, along with the contact options for reservations and a current menu that many had been longing for. The latter, as the new owner Spyridon Gkogkas had already announced when he bought the restaurant, includes the usual and popular home-style, seasonal and traditional cuisine, from spiced meat and farmer's breakfast to schnitzel, roulade and roast venison to rump steak and fish dishes.
According to current opening hours, the restaurant is open for dinner from Wednesday to Friday from 5 p.m. and for lunch and dinner on Saturdays and Sundays from 12 p.m., and is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Lovingly designed guest rooms have been created on two floors, with 200 seats inside and 100 outside.
Restart after the abrupt end of a history spanning over 100 years
The restaurant looks back on a history spanning over 100 years. First mentioned in 1915, "Meinhardts Gartenlokal" was expanded into a restaurant in 1936. In autumn 2022, the long-time owner of the restaurant, who took over the house in 1989 and basically rebuilt it completely in 1999, died. About a year later, the Gkogkas family of Greek descent bought the property.
"However, there were still many tasks to be completed and renovations to be carried out before the reopening in autumn 2024," they say. And on Facebook, the operators write: "We are happy to finally be able to celebrate the opening. It took a lot of energy and time and was unfortunately postponed again and again, but now it's done." Attention: According to the information board, card payments are not yet possible.
